Badminton skill is not determined solely by a player’s technique – there are many other factors that come into play when building a top badminton player. In this short post, I will explore the 4 most important attributes that every badminton player needs.
One of the most important attributes of a badminton player is speed. Badminton is the fastest racket sport in the world and one of the fastest sports overall, with smashes going over 300 miles per hour. To play at a high level, you will also need fast speed. This means that you are able to keep up with the speed your opponent hits in terms of shots. This also means that your footwork movement is at a fast speed, allowing you to get to each shot early and catch the shots high. Everyone has a baseline and maximum speed, but you can try to push these limits with exercises such as agility circuits.
Badminton players also need endurance. Badminton matches can last anywhere from as little as 30 minutes to up to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Each individual rally also involves extremely high speed and requires a lot of energy. Adding this up, an entire badminton match is extremely exhausting – especially for singles players. Endurance is a key factor for badminton players, as they will need this to not only win the match but win the entire tournament.
Next up is technique. This is how accurately the players can play their shots. This means that the net drops are tight to the net, the smash shots are sharp and accurate with good steepness close to the line, and the clears and lifts are high and deep to the backline. Technique has to be meticulously practiced before you can see improvement. For this reason, shot quality and technique are extremely important and helps distinguish you as a strong badminton player.

Finally, a top badminton player has to be consistent. This means that they can maintain their technique and shot quality day in and day out and always perform at this high level. This also means that their speed and endurance are also consistent. They do not slow down after a long game or between different days. They do not get more exhausted on different days. The top badminton players stay consistent in everything that they do and are always able to bring themselves to a high level.
These are the 4 most important qualities for all badminton players.
