Whether you play badminton in your backyard or at your local club, the net is central to every match. It’s what players use to divide their teams, follow rules, and form strategies — and if you want to build consistency in your game, playing around a properly-sized net is essential.
But if you’re setting up a home court (or are simply curious about the sport), you might wonder: What are the official dimensions of a badminton net?
Below, discover everything you need to know about badminton net sizing, from post height to net depth and everything in between.
In badminton, the goal is to send the birdie over the net within bounds, without your opponent being able to hit it back to you. This objective is why the net is an essential piece of the game, and it’s also the reason why its dimensions matter.
After all, the specific height and width are what determine the techniques and strategies players use, down to the smallest movements.
With that in mind, correct net sizing is key if you’re planning to train for badminton tournaments (or if you want to play as “officially” as possible.)
Here are the main types of badminton nets to know about:
So, just how big is a badminton net? The width of a badminton net spans the entire court — from doubles sideline to doubles sideline. This means that it’s 6.1 meters (or 20 feet) long. In addition, it’s 760 millimeters (or about 2 ½ feet) deep.
The center of the net is 1.524 meters (5 feet) off the ground in the center and 1.55 meters (5.1 feet) from the ground at the sidelines.
The posts must be 1.55 meters (or about 5.1 feet) tall. According to the Badminton World Federation’s official rules, the posts must always remain vertical — even when strained by the net.
In singles games, the “in” area on the court is only 5.18 meters (17 feet) wide. However, the posts should always be placed on the doubles sidelines markings (aka the outermost boundary lines width-wise), no matter which version of badminton you’re playing.
Here’s what the official rules have to say about the materials of a badminton net:
And there you have it! Now you know exactly how tall, wide, and deep a badminton net should be according to official rules. Whether you’re playing at home or on a nearby court, sticking to this sizing can help you level up and stay consistent in every match.
